I grew up in Los Angeles and got my early education at Hollywood Park and Santa Anita, the local thoroughbred racetracks. Although I did manage eventually to graduate from UCLA in journalism. A friend, who I met in the Navy, suggested I come east and try advertising. After writing some samples, Doyle Dane & Bernbach hired me. The rest is a greatly edited, but not altered history. DDB was then the “Mecca” but I left, after six months — to the chagrin of the person that hired me — for Jack Tinker & Partners, a creative "Think Tank" that Mary Wells, Dick Rich and Stu Greene were enlisted to stock. I was so flattered to be among the species they collected, I decided to stick around for awhile. It was a good move because two Alka Seltzer commercials I wrote, “Pie Eaters” and “Talking Stomach,” made the Top 50 All Time list and are included in the Smithsonian Institute collection. From Tinker, I followed Wells, Rich & Greene to their new agency. Fortunately, they let me in the door. I’m even mentioned in Mary’s book, "A Big Life In Advertising." I was one of the creators of the J. Peterman Catalog, which inspired a character on "Seinfeld." In between, I’ve trained racehorses, but that’s another story. I’ve worked internationally on brands like Lavazza, Campari, Riva Yachts and Jaguar. I've won many awards. Made many successful pitches. I'm a consultant to many agencies today and as passionate as ever about a great idea. And It’s still fun working with those “rare species” who feel the same way. Speaking of rare species, the Lagotto Romagnolo up there (the one on your right), an ancient Italian truffle hunting breed, has got me walking 15,000 steps a day looking for them, so I, and Dino, the dog, felt I was a natural for the first contest.
